Ontario, San Bernardino County
George and William Chaffey, engineers from Canada, founded Ontario in 1882 and named it for their home province. They laid out Euclid Avenue as a broad boulevard with a tree-shaded median running the length of the colony, and piped mountain water to every lot. The avenue remains the spine of the city and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
